    • John Silver, a prominent Stonehaven businessman, was said to have provided the author Robert Louis Stevenson with the name for his Treasure Island character Long John Silver. Stevenson wrote the novel while in Braemar and his father spent time working in Stonehaven and would have been familiar with the Silver surname, maybe even the fact that one of the Silvers spent time in the West Indies.<br> Another explanation is the headstone of a John Silver (from Maryculter) who is buried in Edinburgh at Grayfriars which can be seen from a pub that Stevenson used to frequent <hr>

      March 20th 1901
      With deep regret we record the death of Mr John Silver, grocer one of the oldest and most hightly respected merchant in the town, which took place at the residence in Ann St on Wednesday evening of last week in the 72nd year of his age. Deceased was a son of the late Mr James Silver farmer at Upper Wyndings, Fetterresso and when a boy came into the town to learn the grocery trade with Mr Fotheringham and afterwards with Mr James Sheriffs. One the retirement of the latter in the early fifties Mr Silver took over the business which he has carried on successfully for nearly half a century. Deceased was a member of the Old Town Council.
