  • Notes
    • Known as Fred. Baptised William Frederick Clayton but seems to have reversed first two Christian names.
Probate entry records that he left his estate to Lilian Margaret Thorley Holmes, spinster, which suggest the pair were never married even though they were together from about 1890 and recorded on the census they were husband and wife.

An English exchange thus speaks of Mr. Fred Storey, the eccentric dancer of the first Gaiety Company which visited Australia:—He is one of the most energetic men that ever breathed. Fortunately he has the constitution of a barbed wire fence, or he could never get through the work he sets him- self in the various stage departments. A nephew of G. A. Storey, R.A., the only lessons he had in painting were those he taught himself when visiting his uncle's studio in St. John's Wood : his only scene models, as a youth, the ferns and trees of Hampstead Heath. And today there is scarcely a theatre he appears in whose play-bill does not bear the words, "Scenery by Fred Storey." After his extraordinary pantomimic success at the Alhambra an Rip Van Winkle in the ballet of that name, Mr. Storey played the character in a dramatic version (Jefferson's) of the legend, and for this production, which was most favourably reviewed by the critics, he painted every inch of the elaborate scenery. It speaks well for the artistic quality of that scenery that much of it—including the " Katskill Mountains"—was purchased by Mr. Beerbolum Tree when he himself produced " Rip Van Winkle" at Her Majesty's Theatre.

The haphazard way, says the London correspondent of the S.A . Register in which a certain class of light-hearted, easy-going theatrical people conduct their matrimonial arrangements has always struck me as highly diverting. A case in point which may have some interest for your readers cropped up in the Divorce Court on Tues day. All who saw the Gaiety Company in Australia will remember Fred Storey, the elastic-limbed eccentric dancer and comedian. Well, about 18 months ago Fred's wife bolted with an actor celled 'Walter Granville,' and went to the States. On route from Australia with the Gaiety girls Fred came across his wife and her betrayer in Chicago. They were appropriately enough playing a moving domestic drama called'' The Bitter Wrong." Perhaps you think Storey promptly slit Granville's weasel and wallowed in his gore. Not at all. They had several gargles together," and were "as chummy as you please." Storey thanked 'Watty Granville for "taking such a hag as his wife off his hands." To which Granville pleasantly replied that "women were a matter of taste." For his part be found Mrs. Storey very jolly. He was really fond of her indeed, and didn't intend to leave her presently, as many a "Johnny might do."

      Leading the Huns a Dance.
The. following paragraph from the Sydney "Bulletin" refers to a brother of Mr. H. R. Storey, Cairns bailiff: "Australian playgoers with good memories will recall the elongated, cadaverous Fred Storey, whose elastic legs twirled through the burlesques of the first London Gaiety Co. Though most of the other principals, including Fred Leslie, Nellie Farran and Charles Danby are dead, Storey is still very much alive, and is, at the age of 57*, now in khaki-a sergeant in the Devonshires. When he joined up he knocked a trifle of 20 years off his age, and the authorities, remembering their old Gaiety nights, winked the other eye, reckoning that if anyone is capable of leading the Huns a dance, he is."
