DEATH OF EARL POULETT
Romance of the Peerage
With the death of Earl Poulett, at the early age of 34, a bygone romance of the peerage is recalled. There are many Londoners who will remember the "Viscount Hinton" who used literally, to "grind"' an organ in the streets with a placard setting forth his claim to the Poulett earldom and estates.
That Earl Poulett's father, the sixth earl, married the organ-grinding claimant's mother was never disputed. As the story went, he made a bet on a homeward voyage from India that he would marry the first single woman he met after landing in England. That woman chanced to be the claimant's mother, daughter of a Landport pilot. But, finding that she was about to become a mother, the earl left her at the end of two months.
"Viscount Hinton's" claims were investigated and disposed of in the House of Lords, and he himself died in Holborn Workhouse Infirmary, 1909.
Earl Poulett, who has just died, was the son of the "romance" earl by his third marriage. His own marriage was not without romance, for he wedded Miss Sylvia Lilian Storey, a beautiful Gaiety girl who was then only 18. She was the daughter of Mr. Fred Storey, the famous comedian, and so closely was the secret kept that only four friends were present at the ceremony in St. James's Church, Piccadilly.
Lord Poulett died in Yorkshire from pneumonia, following influenza.
