A search of the Trinity House petitions (Guildhall Library Ms 30218A/61) revealed the petition of Edward Lawson of 1829, aged 51 and then residing at 10 George Street, Salmons Lane, Limehouse. This stated that he went to sea in 1791 aged 13, and served for 38 years. It lists the 7 ships on which he sailed with details of his position, and states that he left off the sea in 1829 because of an 'affection of the kidney'. His wife Jane was then aged 49, and they had no children under 12 years old, nor any income from real or personal property.
Copies of his marriage and baptism entries show that he (a bachelor) and Jane Andrew, spinster (a minor) were married by licence in the parish of St George Middlesex on 16 November 1802; and that he was baptised at 19 days old on 24 May 1778, also in St George Middlesex, son of Ralph Lawson, cooper by Elizabeth, of Green Bank.
A further search of the register of almspeople of Trinity House (GL Ms 30219/1) revealed the following information:
Mile End No.39: Edward Lawson; admitted 29 January 1850 aged 71; nominated by Captain Edward Foord; 'In what trade as master: Brazil'; 'admitted under the minutes of the Board, 12 June 1849 and 22 January 1850'; died 16 July 1863; also his wife Jane, aged 67, died 29 Oct 1857.
